READ GENESIS 22:20 THROUGH 24:67; MATTHEW 7:1–20
Centuries ago, there was a man named Nicholas who loved God. Moved by the needs of his economically depressed community, he did what he could to help. At Christmastime, he gave gifts to the poor, reminding them that Jesus came to bring hope to the world.
Because of his devout faith and unusual method of spreading the gospel, people started referring to him as Saint Nicholas. Many legends and myths surround the character now known as Santa Claus, but Nicholas was actually an ordinary man whose love for Christ moved him to give.
Many of us also enjoy giving gifts. Watching a child’s face light up on Christmas morning is reward enough for the parent who spent hours standing in a line at the mall.
“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11).
As our Heavenly Father, God delights in giving us good gifts. His gifts—eternal life, forgiveness, peace, and joy—are the best gifts of all.
Prayer Suggestion: Take time to thank God for the wonderful gifts He has given you.
